have gadgets you can be proud of

July 27, 2008

This past week, I’ve spent more time than the usual amount, which is quite a lot already, on my Mac, due to the fact that this week I had to post this month’s worth of my AP summer course work online. When you spend endless hours doing something you begin to notice every little detail of what you’re doing. For me, in this instance, I even noticed the smooth surface of my iSkin ProTouch, which is constantly lying over my MacBook’s “chicklet” keyboard, under my fingers. It suddenly occurred to me how well I’ve been taking care of this machine and how vital that is when you use something as much as I use my Macintosh.

I thought it would be interesting for everyone to share their forms of protection on their most important pieces of technology gear. Not only would this give the rest of us some product names and ideas, but maybe it would even help those who have yet to jump on the bandwagon of obsessive compulsive preservation of their gadgets.

I’ll take a shot at my own “game” in beginning with how I protect my MacBook. In addition to my black iSkin ProTouch, I have the Marware Protection Kit. The kit includes pads for the MacBook’s palm rests to protect against discoloration, as well as a cloth intended for cleaning of the glossy screen. Lastly, I have a clear Speck SeeThru hard case on my MacBook. Though it adds a tiny bit of thickness to my notebook computer, it is entirely worth it to protect beautiful, Apple white plastic from scratches.

How do I protect my other gadgets? Well, when it comes to my LG enV 2, I have to say I went about protection the old fashion way: I simply did not remove the clear, plastic covering that came out of the box with the phone on the screen and aluminum edges. This is a free way to protect my phone from scratching, which my old Chocolate, unfortunately, did badly. As for my iPod Nano 8GB, I am using an Incase Protective Cover. I’m extremely pleased with this simple case, as it fully protects the shiny aluminum parts of the iPod Nano, yet leaves the colorful front open and available for the user to easily access. I hate those flip, leather iPod cases.

Anyway, that’s how I protect my gear. How about you? And by the way, who cares if it is obsessive compulsive? It’ll up our resale value, which we all need in the ever changing technology world today. More importantly, though, in the end, we’ll be the ones who end up with gear we can be proud of as we use it, whether it’s in the comfort of our home or in the center of your nearest Starbucks.

I have to say I use hardly any 3rd party protection on my MacBook or iPhone. I just hate adding things that detract from Apple’s stunning design. However, I am super careful all the time.

The extent of protection for my MacBook (black) goes to using a Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag.

As for my iPhone, I do have a Power Support Crystal Film.

Am I taking a little risk? Yeah, a little. But my MacBook still looks like brand new over a year and a half of getting it, and I have no doubt my iPhone will be the same.
